What did we do?

  • We assessed syphilis rates among women of reproductive age (15-44) in ÐÇ¿ÕÓéÀÖ¹ÙÍø's National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System during 2013–2022.
  • Our goal was to characterize trends and inform national syphilis response efforts.

What did we find?

  • There were 213,366 syphilis cases reported among women of reproductive age during the 2013–2022 time period.
  • Rates of syphilis increased from 12.5 to 78.0 during the study time period, with large increases in growth of late syphilis after 2020 (more than 45% annually).

Why does it matter?

  • Syphilis case rates among women of reproductive age continue to rise rapidly, highlighting the importance of continued syphilis prevention efforts among this population.
  • Health departments may consider prioritizing all stages of syphilis cases in women of reproductive age for potential follow-up and partner services interventions to address the growth in cases and to prevent congenital syphilis.
