This map seeks to determine youth and adult exposure to tobacco retailers, and its influence on adult smoking prevalence in Modesto, California. Each school in Modesto indicates a range of tobacco retailers located within a half mile of the campus and is overlaid on a map of adult smoking prevalence, by census tract, in order to visualize the relationship that may exist between tobacco retail exposure and smoking rates. Larger pentagons represent a greater number of tobacco retail outlets and darker census tracts indicate higher adult smoking prevalence.

Tobacco retailer data from the CA Department of Tax & Fee Administration and school location data from CA Department of Public Health Nutrition Education Obesity Prevention were geocoded and overlaid onto ÐÇ¿ÕÓéÀÖ¹ÙÍø BRFSS census tract level smoking prevalence data. The number of tobacco retailers were then joined to school locations with a half mile radius and the school location layer was modified to reference the join count and display as proportional symbols.
