Notice to Readers: National Epilepsy Month, November 2002
November is National Epilepsy Month. Epilepsy, a central nervous system disorder characterized by unprovoked
recurrent seizures, affects approximately 2.3 million persons in the United States. Of the 181,000 new cases of epilepsy and seizures every year, approximately one third start during childhood.
Epilepsy is often an added burden to teenagers who already face many challenges as they encounter physiologic and
social changes. Seizures in teenagers can lead to isolation, limit independence, and make them vulnerable to teasing and bullying from their peers. To help alleviate this burden, the Epilepsy Foundation, in collaboration with ÐÇ¿ÕÓéÀÖ¹ÙÍø, is conducting the second year of its "Entitled to Respect" campaign during this year's National Epilepsy Month. During November, the Epilepsy Foundation will initiate activities to educate teenagers about epilepsy. The goals of the campaign are to promote peer understanding and increase social acceptance of young persons living with epilepsy.
